Birding Highlights
All Seasons
Some of the birds and mammals which can be seen all year round in Estonia include:
Raptors: White-tailed Eagle, Goshawk
Game: Hazel Grouse, Black Grouse, Capercaillie
Wildfowl/Divers: Mute and Whooper Swans, Goosander, Red-breasted Merganser, Black and Velvet
Scoters, Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck, Smew, Red- and Black-throated Divers
Owls: Eagle, Pygmy, Ural, Tengmalm’s
Woodpeckers: Three-toed, Black, Grey-headed, Great Spotted, Lesser Spotted, White-backed
Passerines: Crested Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Willow Tit, Northern Nuthatch, Great Grey Shrike, Common and Parrot Crossbills, Hawfinch, Spotted Nutcracker
Mammals: Roe Deer, Moose, Raccoon Dog, Red Squirrel, Red Fox, Grey Seal, Beaver, Wild Boar, Lynx, Brown Bear, Wolf
Spring Migration
From the end of March through to beginning of June is the time of the famous East Atlantic migration when hundreds of thousands of geese, scoters, ducks and waders pass through on there way to the Arctic breeding grounds. During this time we also see the arrival of the summer visitors.
Migrants include: Whooper Swan, Bewick’s Swan, Taiga Bean Goose, Tundra Bean Goose, Pink-footed Goose, White-fronted Goose, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Brent Goose, Barnacle Goose, Red-breasted Goose
In addition the Black Guillemot nests in the coastal cliffs of northern Estonia before returning to the sea for the rest of the year.
Summer Visitors
Arrive from March to May and leave in October. They include:
Raptors: Golden and Lesser Spotted and Greater Spotted Eagles; Montagu’s, Hen, and Marsh Harriers; Osprey
Wildfowl: Shellduck, Gadwall, Pintail, Wigeon, Shoveler, Pochard, Greylag Goose
Waders/Grebes: Corncrake, Avocet; Ringed, Grey, Golden Plovers; Temminck’s Stint, Ruff, Broad-billed Sandpiper; Common, Jack and Great Snipes; Bar-tailed Godwit, Spotted Redshank, Red-necked Phalarope, Grey Phalarope; Great Crested, Little, Slavonian, Red-necked Grebes
Herons and Storks: Bittern, Grey Heron, White and Black Storks, Common Crane, Great Egret
Woodpeckers/Hoopoes: Hoopoe, Wryneck
Passerines: Wood Lark, Citrine Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Savi’s and Blyth’s Warblers, Bluethroat, Thrush Nightingale, Black Redstart, Golden Oriole, Northern Wheatear, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Penduline Tit, Bearded Tit, Red-backed Shrike
Autumn Migration
During September and October we see the autumn migration of thousands of cranes and geese, waterfowl, passerines and raptors flying south. Also seen in the autumn migration is the Curlew Sandpiper and Spotted Nutcracker.
Winter Visitors
During the winter we can see flocks of thousands of Long-Tailed Ducks and Stellar`s Eider.
